Over the past decade, THE ROKKER COMPANY has developed a whole range of functional motorcycle jeans. Special attention has been paid to offer the right motorcycle pants for every taste and every weather situation. But which type of motorcycle jeans are you? Which jeans suit you? What do you have to pay special attention to when buying? In the following we would like to give you a few tips, which could be useful for you when choosing a new pair of motorcycle jeans.
Kevlar? Dynatec? UHMWPE? Various suppliers advertise a wide range of technologies and fabrics that have been processed in their motorcycle jeans. As an end customer, it is difficult to keep an overview here. We bring light into the darkness and divide the motorcycle pants into the following categories.
1. NATURAL MATERIALS
Probably the best known material in the field of motorcycle clothing. The tanned and thus permanently preserved animal skin consists of fine fibers that are firmly bonded together. Leather is breathable, durable and abrasion resistant and therefore very popular with many motorcyclists. Of course, there are countless different variants from buffalo leather to stingray leather, but the properties remain mostly the same.
Aromatic polyamides. Trade name "Kevlar". 5 x more tear-resistant than steel.
High tensile polyamide. Highly tear resistant and extremely durable.
Polyethilene with ultra-high molar mass. Appears in the field of motorcycle clothing under various names such as ROKKERTECH or Dyneema. UHWMPE is about 40% stronger than Kevlar.
THE MOST POPULAR SYNTHETICS
Composed of high-strength polyamide specially developed for Schoeller, other polyamides such as Cordura® and elastic monofilaments. The special fabric construction with high thread density ensures good durability of the fabric. schoeller®-dynatec creates an optimal combination of comfort, style and resistance for high stress.
UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is, as the name suggests, a polyethylene with a very high molecular weight. Polyethylene can be considered the plastic with the simplest structure: a chain of carbon atoms, with only hydrogen on the sides. When this chain is very long, the material is called UHMWPE. One of the most novel materials, which was created by combining UHMWPE and cotton, is called ROKKERTECH. The special fabric structure made it possible to produce a pair of motorcycle jeans with only one layer of fabric. This allows an unprecedented wearing comfort while maintaining the same level of safety.
AND WHICH MATERIAL IS THE SICHERSTEN?
Countless videos on the subject of abrasion resistance of different materials can be found on the Internet. In an amusing way, brave protagonists are dragged after a motorcycle and then the effects on the motorcycle pants are extensively compared with each other. These tests certainly give the viewer a good indication of the forces acting on the material and the body during a fall. But at this point it must be said that these are in no way scientific tests. Since various factors such as speed, weight of the rider, impact angle, weather and procurement of the surface play a major role in an accident, live tests should be taken with a certain degree of caution. Basically, it can be said that all the materials mentioned above offer a similar level of abrasion protection. The crucial difference lies in the details. What to look for when buying a pair of motorcycle jeans, we explain in the next section.
1. WHAT TYPE OF DRIVER ARE YOU?
There is no motorcycle jeans for all cases. Every pair of pants has its strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the first step is to evaluate what type of rider you are. Because there are different products available for every season and weather situation. Of course, your geographical location also plays a decisive role in choosing the right jeans. Do you ride a motorcycle all year round? Only in summer? Only short distances in nice weather? All these considerations should be taken into account when buying a pair of motorcycle jeans. When building a pair of motorcycle jeans, there are basically two different variants.
The double layer motorcycle jeans
In double-layer motorcycle jeans, the outer skin is made of denim and the inner skin is made of one of the above-mentioned safety materials. It is essential to ensure that the inner fabric covers the entire leg if possible. If only extremities such as buttocks, hips and knees are covered, the risk of injury is much higher.
The single layer motorcycle jeans
2. THE PROTECTORS
3. THE FIT
Usually you spend not only a few minutes on the bike, but are significantly longer on tour. Therefore, a comfortable cut of the jeans is indispensable. When buying should therefore from the outset to pay attention to whether the pants cut when sitting. Especially in the area of the groin, this can have very unpleasant consequences. The length of the pants should also be considered. If the protectors still sit in the right place, rather buy one size larger or longer. Proven brands have years of experience with size charts and therefore usually guarantee an optimal cut of the jeans. Below is a brief overview of the most common jeans cuts. Here, too, attention should be paid to personal preferences.
4. THE QUALITY
Most motorcyclists do not afford a new pair of motorcycle pants every season. The more important is the quality of the products under the magnifying glass. Ask your seller where the jeans were produced and what controlling the manufacturer of the motorcycle jeans performs to ensure optimal quality. The closer the manufacturer is to the production site, the greater the possibility for appropriate quality control. The country of origin can also have a great influence on quality in another way. Countries with a long textile tradition usually have greater experience in the manufacturing process, which has a long-term positive effect on a product.
The difference here is also in the details. High-quality brands can be recognized by well thought-out products in which, for example, protector pockets are also made of abrasion-resistant material.
5. THE DURABILITY
Of course, the quality and durability of motorcycle jeans are closely related. What increases the cost of motorcycle jeans? 1. High quality raw materials, 2. Excellent workmanship, 3. Continuous quality control. Based on these fundamentals, jeans are created, which will give pleasure to the motorcyclist for a long time.
